The first women to be employed in the automobile manufacturing industry were known as the Magneto Girls. They were hired at the Ford Motor Company's Piquette Plant in Detroit, Michigan. Working in the winding and insulating department, these women played a role in the fly wheel magneto assembly process. Their prior experience in the textile industries made them a perfect fit for the job as they were able to work well with the fine materials necessary for the flywheel magneto. The role they played in the assembly process contributed to the success that made the Model T one of the most historically important automobiles of all time.
