Sarah Collins Cuppy (1813-1900) lived in South Whitley where her husband was a land agent. She rode horseback twice annually to Richmond (120 miles & 5 days one way through swamps, bear & rattlesnake territory) to take his land collection monies to the land office. She ran an Underground Railroad Station at her farm, assisting people to freedom. Sarah's husband, serving in the Indiana legislature as a Senator, died suddenly, making Sarah a young widow. During the Civil War she rushed to the side of her wounded son. Although he died of his wounds, she cared for many of the wounded in the hospital. She brought several wounded soldiers to her home where she nursed them back to health. Sarah then turned her home into a hospital for returning soldiers, without homes or families. When her brother and sister died of influenza, Sarah raised their children along with her own 4, for a total of 13 children. She was buried in 1900 on her farm with honors for her brave and heroic works.
