This film still shows the Mitla Cafe in San Bernardino. Founded by Lucía Rodríguez in the 1930s, it is still run by her family today. Lucía's husband Salvador worked for the railroad, as did many Mexican-American men, and the West side of the city was flourishing. Mount Vernon Avenue was a natural stopping point for Route 66 travelers after the barren desert. Lucía, who was the matriarch of her family, used her teenage daughters' help to run the new family business 24-hours a day. Although strict, Lucía's efforts paid off and the business was a hit! Glen Bell had a hot dog stand across the street from the Mitla Cafe and observed how well it was doing. So well, in fact, that he took it upon himself to learn how to make tacos from Lucía and Salvador before launching Taco Bell. The Mitla Cafe is now in the hands of the third generation and it is still a necessary stop for every politician who wants any clout in San Bernardino.
