Marjorie Stoneman Douglas is known as the "Mother of the Everglades" Her book "The River of Grass", written in 1939, opened our eyes to the marvel of The Everglades, which is unlike any other place on earth. It was written in the home Ms. Douglas built in 1926. A simple life in this house was her pleasure where with books and typewriter she fought to save this environmental wonder. She lived here until her death shortly after her 108th birthday.
