The grave of Mother Jone's, in Mount Olive. Illinois, in the Miners' Cemetery, is, as I recall, right along the original route of the "mother road". But I don't remember ever seeing it mentioned in any of the interpretive celebrations of Route 66. Even Gene Autry recorded a song in her memory (1931), and the modern magazine has kept her name alive. We took this focused picture on a gray day in the summer of 2016, when we stopped to honor her memory en route through Chicago to our home in Southern California- most of the way on 66. Sure, we enjoyed the blue whale, and the other kitschy or commercial landmarks, but this monument to labor, and this champion of labor Mother Jones, was one of the most moving. The site deserves to be better recognized, alongside of the quirky sites which line this route that are more celebrated, if more superficial.
