On Sunday, May 12, 1935, Henrietta Buckler Seiberling brought together two admitted alcoholics, her friend, Dr. Bob, a prominent Akron surgeon and Bill W., a stock analyst visiting from New York. The two men spoke until late into the evening and the conversation laid the foundation for Alcoholics Anonymous. Over the next few years, Dr. Bob, Bill W., Henrietta and others dedicated their lives to helping alcoholics find recovery. Henrietta’s home, the Gate Lodge, sits on the property of Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, a historic site and National Historic Landmark. It is open to the public.
