Ms. Sallie Jones was appointed superintendent of Charlotte County Public Schools in 1937 and served with distinction for 16 years, the longest tenure in the history of the Charlotte County school system. She introduced the first school lunchroom program and established the policy that all teachers be qualified in their special fields. Her role was especially challenging because some members of the all-male Board of Public Instruction believed a woman could not govern effectively, an attitude she overcame with tact and ability. Ms. Jones retired in 1953 after 31 years as an educator. In 1956, a new elementary school was built in Punta Gorda and it was suggested that the school be named in honor of Miss Sallie, a beloved educator. Three years later, the Sallie Jones Elementary School was officially dedicated. Sallie Jones passed away in 1960, having left an indelible mark on the education system of Charlotte County.
