Sarah Winnemucca was a Nevada Paiute woman born around 1844. She fought for Native American rights until her death in 1891. Educated in a Catholic school, Sarah learned to read and write English, and traveled the country advocating for better treatment for Native American peoples. Her book Life Among the Paiutes was published in 1883 as part memoir, part Paiute history, and has been invaluable to anthropologists. In 2005 her statue was added to the National Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol. Two copies were made- one for the Winnemucca Grammar School, and one for the Nevada State Capitol.
