Educators (and sisters) Jane and Ellen Lloyd Jones commissioned from their nephew, Frank Lloyd Wright, for this school building in 1901. The building stood on the campus of the Hillside Home School institution outside of Spring Green, Wisconsin. A coeducational day and boarding school, grades 1-12, it ran under the direction of the Lloyd Jones sisters from 1887 until it closed in 1915. Years later, educator, Mary Ellen Chase, would write that, "I suppose that the Hillside Home School, were it existing today as it was existing in 1909, would be termed a progressive school by all the supporters and disciples of such institutions.... they were sympathetic, understanding, patient, wise, and humorous women...." A Goodly Fellowship, by Mary Ellen Chase (The Macmillan Company, New York City, 1939), p. 93.Hillside can be seen on tours of Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin estate conducted by Taliesin Preservation.
