Glensheen is a 39 room mansion on the shores of Lake Superior. The mansion belonged to Clara and Chester Congdon and today is owned by the University of Minnesota Duluth. Glensheen is currently allowed to be toured, not just to see it’s magnificent beauty (it is beautiful) but also to celebrate the achievements of the daughters who lived there. Clara Bannister graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in art and taught at a women’s college in Canada until she married Chester and eventually moved to Duluth. There she raised six children and was in charge of the large estate. Later in life Clara turned many of her efforts towards humanitarian causes. She gave generously and engaged on various boards, in 1950 just before her death she received the George Arents pioneer medal from Syracuse University.
