Augusta Savage overcame poverty, racism, and gender discrimination to become a luminary of the Harlem Renaissance. Her sculptures celebrated African American culture, and her work as an arts educator and political activist catalyzed social change. She founded the Harlem Community Arts Center at 290 Lenox Avenue, and the Harlem Art Workshop at 306 West 141st Street. She left a spectacular body of work as well as a remarkable legacy.
