Dr. Flora Stanford was a wife, mother, and teacher when she went to medical school at age 37. With her son, daughter, and a nanny in tow, she attended Boston Medical College, graduating in 1878. When her daughter Emma was prescribed a change in climate in 1888, Stanford moved to Deadwood, Dakota Territory, where she was the town’s first female doctor. Stanford ran her medical practice from her home on Williams Street, specializing in homeopathic medicine to treat the diseases of women and children. Stanford was also active with the school board, the Women’s Relief Corps, the W.C.T.U., the Nineteenth Century Club, and supported women’s suffrage. In 1897, Flora bought a ranch near Sundance, Wyo. and worked throughout the SD/WY border area. The Deadwood Historic District was made a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
