Julia Tuttle is the only woman in the United States to have founded a city. Julia Tuttle was a business woman and an early pioneer with her home at an outpost on the Miami River. She encouraged Henry Flagler to bring his railroad further south after a devastating freeze in 1894-1895 devastated orange groves all the way to Palm Beach. She sent him a letter with an orange blossom, indicating it never freezes in Miami. Julia Tuttle’s efforts brought Flagler and his railroad to Miami. People came and stayed. In 1896, Julia Tuttle founded the City of Miami, an unprecedented accomplishment for a woman. 2021 is the 125th birthday of Miami. I am developing a monumental mural in her likeness. "Urban Threads", a public art installation to be made by PLY-Miami fiber guild and Miami residents is traditional women’s work, crocheted yarn art. We are literally creating the fabric of community, connecting diverse populations with the common goal – acknowledging Julia Tuttle, Miami's Mother.
