The original Camp Cajon Monument was dedicated on July 4, 1919 along the National Old Trails Road which was later became Route 66 in 1926. Camp Cajon was a popular rest stop and picnic area for travelers. It was built by William Bristol as the gateway to Southern California. Local organizations built other structures at the Camp and contributed round cement picnic tables with the donor organization's name inscribed on a brass plaque. Sadly, the Camp was destroyed by a huge flood in 1938. Today volunteers have reconstructed the monument and added interpretive signage about the trails that passed through this area. An original picnic table was recently added. The monument is located on Interstate 15 (with Route 66 buried underneath). Drive past the McDonald's at Wagon Trail Road. There is a Route 66 shield painted in the roadway. It's a good place to take a photo as there is not much traffic on that dead end road.
