In 1913 recent Smith College graduates Charlotte Perry and Portia Mansfield started the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp near Steamboat Springs, Colorado. It is now the oldest continuously operating performing arts camp in the nation. In the early 20th century, the camp was a pioneering influence in the development of modern dance, choreography, and performing arts education. The camp's faculty and alumni include Agnes de Mille, Louis Horst, José Limon, John Cage, Julie Harris, Dustin Hoffman, and Jessica Biel. After fifty years of running the camp, founders Charlotte Perry and Portia Mansfield retired. Today the camp is owned and operated by a community based nonprofit organization. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, its rustic buildings are scattered throughout the rural 74-acre campus. Each summer the camp attracts more than 250 students nationwide from elementary school to college age to participate in dance, theater, equestrian, and arts programs.
