The Surratt House Museum is located in the historic Surratt's Tavern. The structure was built in 1852 and served as a business and family home for John Surratt, Sr. and his family--Mary Jenkins (Surratt), Isaac Surratt, Anna Surratt, and John Surratt, Jr. After the death of John, Sr., Mary took over running the tavern. The structure also served as the workplace for Rachel Hawkins, an enslaved woman rented by the Surratt family. Mary was arrested on April 17,1865 and eventually tried and executed for her role in President Lincoln's assassination. This made her the first woman executed by order of the Federal Government. Anna was also arrested but released before the trial once it became clear she knew nothing of the conspiracy. Rachel was called as a witness in both Mary's military trial and John Jr.'s later civilian trial. These three women played important roles in the Lincoln assassination and trial.
