The Edward R. Wilson House, now the University of Delaware Farm House, was the site of meetings of the Newark, Delaware, New Century Club and the Newark Equal Suffrage Association during the years (1911-1919) when Lillian Woolson Hayward lived there. A graduate of Smith College, Lillian Hayward came to Delaware with her husband, Harry Hayward, director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Delaware Experimental Station and dean of the College of Agriculture. During the years that she lived in the house, Lillian Hayward was an energetic advocate for women's higher education, helping to promote formation of a Women's College in Newark, a WCTU and Delaware Grange member, a clubwoman, but above all a committed suffragist. She held suffrage "parlor meetings" at the house, and presided over meetings of the Newark Equal Suffrage Association at the house. She also lobbied for the cause with the state legislature.
