Maude Craig, public school teacher, suffragist, civil rights and community activist, was born in Austin, Texas in February 1880. A 1900 Prairie View A&M University graduate, she helped establish the El Paso (EP)Phyllis Wheatley Club & led campaigns in support of World War I. Beginning in 1917, she served as EP NAACP vice-president, the first branch in the state; founding organizer of the EP Negro Woman’s Civic & Enfranchisement League & president of the EP Colored Woman’s Club. She was an outspoken suffragist who in 1918 attempted to apply for affiliation in the National American Woman Suffrage Association. She fought for desegregated public schools.
