Lizzy was born in Worcestershire County England in 1842. Being female and petite didn't keep here from becoming a blacksmith, emigrating to America, becoming the first registered female resident of the rough and tumble silver mining town of Rico, Colorado where she ran her own dairy, or moving on to become the first beef cattlewoman in Southwest Colorado. Lizzy and her third husband, Henry Knight, formerly her son-in-law, homesteaded early in the settlement of Disappointment Valley west of Rico. They prospered: Henry with farming, brokering livestock trades in that booming cattle country and becoming the Post Master of the Valley's first post office; Lizzy with her own beef herd, starting and operating a small store in their cabin and being the unofficial banker for the Valley. With her saucy good humor, the Knight homestead became the center for commerce and social interaction in Disappointment Valley. The cabin still stands and is on Colorado's Most Endangered Places List.
