Caroline Lockhart was truly in love with the Old West. As a best-selling novelist, editor and publisher of the Cody Enterprise, and the first President of the Cody Stampede, her influence helped to shape Cody, Wyoming and the American West. Lockhart associated with people from all walks of life- from cowboys to Hollywood and society types. When Lockhart proposed a giant statue of Buffalo Bill be sculpted by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Lockhart was successful in not only getting the artist to agree to creating the piece, but also to raising the required funds. The statue, "The Scout," has become an emblem for Cody and still greets visitors to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. When Caroline Lockhart passed away in 1962, there was no funeral service. Rather, at her request, her ashes were scattered over "the most convenient peak."
