Emily Kimbrough was born in Muncie, IN, in 1899. An author, editor, and lecturer, Emily wrote about Muncie’s past, specifically the “East End” neighborhood where she grew up. She graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1921 and then went to Paris to attend the Sorbonne. The following year, she was an advertising copy writer for Marshall Field in Chicago and by 1927 she was the editor of department store publications. After moving to New York City, Emily became the fashion editor and later managing editor of Ladies’ Home Journal. She wrote Our Hearts Were Young and Gay with fellow author (and actress) Cornelia Otis Skinner. The best-seller was made into a movie in 1944. She wrote several other books and many of them revealed her Indiana background and humor. Emily Kimbrough died at the age of 89 in New York City. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a part of the historic district that bears her name, the Emily Kimbrough House is a house museum.
