On August 19, 1958, Clara Luper and 13 of her students made history when they staged the first "sit-in" of the civil rights movement at the Katz Drug Store in downtown Oklahoma City. The children sat at the whites-only lunch counter and ordered Cokes. Because they were black, this seemingly simple act was illegal. They weren’t served by the staff and endured taunts, jeers, and threats from the other patrons. They returned the next day and were again refused service, but staff relented on the third day and a large group was served that afternoon. Clara Luper and her young students persisted, campaigning successfully to desegregate dozens of Oklahoma City businesses. The courage of Ms. Luper and her young companions helped spark a movement that changed Oklahoma society and reshaped American culture in the twentieth century.
