Lavinia Goodell was Wisconsin’s first woman lawyer. In this capitol building in Madison, Wisconsin the Supreme Court rejected her application to practice before it in 1876 because of her sex. It is where she successfully lobbied the all male legislature to make bar admission gender neutral in 1877; and it is where she was finally admitted to practice in 1879 and won her first case before the supreme court in 1880.
